What's New On Ithaca Greece
May 2018
Monday 21st - Today was the anniversary of Unification, when the Ionian Islands became joined under Greece. Click Here or on photograph below for more pics of the parade this morning.
Friday 25th - More dirty rain the other day. We've had alot of that since before Christmas and it continues on and off with the Sahara travelling north. Some refreshing wind blew that dirt away from Ithaca and we once again began to see the clear views we expect at this time of year.
Saturday 26th - It's really Summer. What a relief. Yes, blue skies and warm, warm sunshine, no dirt from the Sahara threatening to fall on us.
Below - It's probably only a matter of time before this old building gets a facelift or maybe even pulled down, so I thought I'll take a photo of this building on the Frikes bayside before it disappears.
Above - Yes, some (at least I hope it's only some and not all) of the beautiful age old trees in the Stavros playground have been chopped down. The reason is that they were unsafe for the children, but they've been there so long that if there really is an issue of safety, then maybe moving the playground to an area where there are no trees may have been a better idea as there are still other trees which may also fall on their heads that being the case. It's not like the playground is remaining as it is, it too is being changed so it could very well have been moved.
The tree lopper/chopper rushed out from behind his truck to take a photo of me taking a photo as if that would deter me. haha...Um no...I'm so used to attempts at intimidation that i don't blink now. I waved for the camera instead.
Below - Lush and green views around Kolieri, upper and lower. It's easy to forget how picturesque this little area of the island is. Views across Afales and olive groves. Beautiful.
Above - So many ruins around the island, dotting the landscape with little pieces of history.
Above - A peak through the trees across to Platrithia from Kolieri.
If you missed last night's performance of the play 'Who Discovered America' a play by Chrissa Spilioti at the Cultural center in Vathy, you can still head along tonight for the final performance.
Sunday 27th - Below the Porto Thiaki Hotel, opposite Margarita Cafe in Stavros, where you once had Yiannis Taverna and the local kava shop you will now find Kanenas Restaurant which opened it's doors for the first time last night to a packed house!
With Delicious opening up last year and Kanenas this year, it's going to give Stavros the injection of spirit it's needed over the past couple of years by bringing the village to life again. Everyone will benefit from it.
While taking some pics of the opening night, I was inundated with stunning reviews of the food and of the service. Traditional fare in a pristine and warm environment. Congratulations to all!

Above - Tseligas Taverna at the other end of Stavros with Delicious, the new kids on the block at the corner Below.
And with more action in Stavros, the local Kiosk will also have more reason to be open from now on.
Tuesday 29th - IMPORTANT NOTICE: Tomorrow, Wednesday 30th May, there's a national strike which will include ferries, so if you've planned to travel tomorrow, you'll need to make other arrangements.
Thursday 31st - Another month just flew by. Now we'll be deep into the Summer months with the start of June tomorrow. More and more people ending up on our shores.
