Once out of the mountains, and through some ordinary villages and towns, the road takes us into Nafplion.  The sky is almost completely blue now, but unfortunately, the sun is also almost ready to set. This Nafplion is a favourite weekend getaway destination of the Athenians. It's wide boulevards and squares, many cafes and restaurants and the old part of the town have something for everyone.  The fort at the peak of the town and the colourful bay-side, give Nafplion an interesting character. It's clean, the people are friendly and the buildings are interesting. This driveby doesn't allow for a good look around, but I've been before, so I can tell you it's worth a good look, and a climb up the many steps to the fort at the summit of the rock which stands proudly over it.

We leave Nafplion and make our way towards Athens via the back road through Argos, named after the infamous Argonauts.  Mountain ranges are left behind and green fields, decorated in dense growths of wildflowers, open up across the landscape on either side of the road. It's Monday and the roads are empty.  No traffic jams, no four lane freeways, no pollution.  The road to nowhere in particular has made a nice change to the road from Kioni to Vathy. The car gets out of 3rd gear and the speedometer clocks over 60 mph. Not a single person waved as we drove by them and no trucks, spewing fumes, cut us off at the bend.
