October 2023

Sunday 1st - HELLO! It's October, but there are still people swimming. Warm days and cooler nights make the perfect weather.

Wednesday 4th - The weather is changing, but not drastically...yet. Nights are cooler, but the days are quite lovely and warm.

Friday 6th - Greece is in the heated atmosphere of passionate concern, propaganda and all things electorial for it's local elections on the 8th October. Ithaca is a little more luke warm. It's common knowledge, he/she who has the biggest family, friend base or opportunity to give life improvements as an incentive, will win the election. I am allowed to pay tax, but not allowed to vote, so I have no sway. I hope the best person for the island wins despite the obvious flaws, when on a small island everyone knows eachother.

Sunday 8th - AFter some dreary skies, today it's all blue and fine.

Tuesday 10th - The big voting weekend for the local elections is over. On Ithaca Dionysios Stanitsas regained his majority as Mayor, so congratulations to him and his team.

Wednesday 11th - Election fever is all but over with celebrations going on for those who won a seat or retained their seat. Soon the Flotillas will end and we'll see an end to the Season when they go. The weather will soon change after that and locals will be preparing for their olive harvests. Below - Anoghi.

Summer on Ithaca Greece

Sunday 1st

Parking on the edges. When so many visitors are frightened to drive along our narrow roads, the builders here have no fear.

Wednesday 4th - Ithaca is still so lush and green, even after a hot, dry Summer.

Friday 6th - While in the cities election fever brings out the riot police, on Ithaca, we are alot calmer. Besides, the police here can barely afford petrol for their cars, let alone riot gear and tear gas. Budgets have increased for local governements over the years due to the EU, but still, more money gets spent on roads and building projects than on the youth who desperately need encouragement to stay on the island to be part of a positive future that they will ultimately inherit and on the elderly, who at present must leave the island if they need care in a facility specifically for the aged.

What I've always loved about Greece is that the extended family keeps the poor from the streets, the young from drugs and alcohol and the elderly from an early and sad demise, but in order to keep the extended family together, Greece needs to spend some of it's EU cash on projects that enhance, not degrade this wonderful aspect of Greek life. Keeping my fingers crossed that local governments all around Greece, revere what is the core of Greece and not some far away city so detached from Greek culture.

Sunday 8th - It's Sunday and it's fine.

Tuesday 10th - Congratulations to all who took a seat in Ithaki's Council. Wishing everyone a successful term with lots of benefits to the local community.

Wednesday 11th - Below - Anoghi.
