What's New On Ithaca Greece

Friday 1st
HAPPY NEW YEAR ITHAKI LOVERS EVERYWHERE!!
Below - In and around Frikes. Cyclone Ianos closed this village down mid September last year, but you can't keep the locals down forever. By the time Summer 2021 comes around, this village will be sparkling with acitivity again and you would never know what it went through during that unique and damaging cyclone.
Monday 4th - More rain, more sunshine, more restrictions, extended lockdown, but all is fine on Ithaca Greece.
Tuesday 5th - I don't think there will be an Epiphany ceremony this year. It may be commemorated somehow, but I doubt there will be any diving for the cross as on the Mainland it has for this continued lockdown, been made illegal. Below - Frikes in winter, looking quite a bit lonelier than in previous years.
Wednesday 6th - Quite alot of rain yesterday, and with the north and south of Ithaki, divided due to the fallen in road at Aetos, it's quite a challenge especially for those in the north who are cut off from the main village. Below Stavros view from Apostolata.

Thursday 7th - More road damage in Kioni along the bay road just past Spavento's bayside seating. This, like the Aetos road collapse, this is still the after effect from last year's cyclone Ianos.
Friday 8th - I'd like to show more of the locals on Ithaca, but with very strict mask and distancing laws, I can't do that. I would hate for anyone to be in trouble with the police.
Above - Aetos. The main road is closed as I've mentioned before, but there has been a car ferry put on which will take people from Frikes to Vathy as well as get supplies from south to north. It's going to be a long and expensive fix. The road is too unstable for any traffic.
Monday 11th - Will this be the last day of lockdown? We shall find out later today. Due to the serious damage to the roads around the island, everyone is pretty much designated to either north or south when the recently activated ferry doesn't go between Frikes and Vathy. Engineers are coming to the island to investigate the damage to the Aetos section of road and will then write a report which will land on various officials desks. That needs to be done before any work is done to fix the road. This could take some time. The 'meleti' (Study) is a renowned phenomena in Greece and requires a fair amount of Greek bureaucracy.
Friday 15th - Half way through another month and still no real meaning back in our lives, something we all hoped for. From news reports it appears we may not celebrate Easter again this year. Easter as you must know by now, is the biggest celebration in Greece nationally, not just on Ithaca, so it would be a big blow to the psyche of the population if Easter was banned again. I think all of Greece is crossing fingers right now that it won't happen. I know there are bigger issues than Easter, but Easter would be a symbol that life is returning back to something everyone recognizes as normal.

Friday 1st
The weather has been mixed with more storms and rain and wind to equal parts sunshine and blue sky.

Monday 4th - Not the best start to 2021 with further restrictions and extended lockdown, but we'll make the most of it when we can.
Tuesday 5th - It appears that 2020 will be extended into 2021, at least until Spring and possibly Summer, still locals are making the best of things.
Wednesday 6th - We were all looking forward to lockdown ending tomorrow, but it's been extended until the 11th...so far. Ithaca has had no illness due to covid.

Friday 15th - Would love to get some more people photos online, but we don't want to get anyone in trouble with the law. Ithaca still has no cases, although I believe the vaccinations have begun or will begin soon.
