August 2013 - Monday 5th - Tonight is Stavros Panighiri night. Lots of people coming just for that. It's the biggest street festival on ithaca during Summer.
Left - Vathy at night is a beautiful gleaming center of Ithaca. All the lights reflecting in the harbour, the colour and activity of Summer. If you spend most of your time in the north, it really is worth heading south to enjoy some of the nightlife in Ithaki's capital of Vathy.
Above Left and Below - Not all the action takes place on the bayside. There are lovely restaurants in the back streets too. Libretto is located just behind the town hall, one street back from the bay road.
The back streets, have a more romantic feel if you're looking for something a little more intimate than the buzzing bayside.
Left - Locals like to meet in the village square, where most of the activity takes place.
Above and Below Left - The Dionisios Solomos ferry from Patras, docks in Vathy around 12.30am, right infront of Karamela cafe. The large ferry takes up quite a bit of room to moor, moving the yachting traffic away at each end of the dock. It nearly takes up the width of the bay, to turn itself around.
The word was that the ferry was full, but most of the ferry traffic must have got off at Sami in Kefalonia. It wasn't too hectic in Vathy.
Above - Hundreds of day trippers came off the boats yesterday. It's a time for people watching.
Tuesday 6th - Last night was the first night of Sortiros, the Stavros Panighiri and it was HUGE. Photos coming some time today (I hope), but for now, enjoy some summer views.
Ok now I don't quite understand what this picture has to say. As far as I can tell, it's quite confusing. I won't show my face in public, but I have no qualms about showing my half-naked body and bottom. Huh?
Things are definitely revving up here on the island. Lots and lots more people coming to stay and day trip. It's very busy, there's lots of traffic, and the cicadas are really, really loud.

Wednesday 7th - Hot summer days means many hours at the beach for those on holiday, and of course the lucky locals who get the opportunity between working.
Ithaki's beaches, even during the summer, are pristine and clear from end to end.

Thursday 8th - If you head down to Vathy tonight, you can catch a religious parade in front of the Council offices and in Kioni you can catch 'On the Road' at Cine Vigla (terrace on top of Spavento Bar.)
So much going on, I can barely keep track, let alone up with everything.
So many people on the island now. Some well known summer faces and many more unknown faces here on their annual holidays.
Each day, the harbours around the island fill up with more and more yachts sailing in. All in all, it's a very vibrant and colourful summer this year on Ithaca.
Above and Left - Kioni at night. Something very magical about light reflecting off the bay.
Below Left - One of Frike's favourite faces to photograph. So many visitors to the island are just fascinated with this white bearded sailor who always seems to be so generous with his image being shared throughout the world.
Friday 9th - Another scorcher today. Quite a warm night with more mid 30 temperatures.
Last evening, there was quite a bit going on, north and south. In the north, Athina Arseni presented the childrens' play from the Summer Theatre Camp, that seems to have become an annual event.
It seems Ithaca has tried its hardest this year to make summer a little more interesting for both locals and visitors alike, although, advertising the events efficiently, is its downfall. Unless you're looking on every notice board, some of these events simply pass us by.
It also appears there may be another Panighiri (festival) in Frikes on the 10th. I have no idea why or who is putting it on, but this is the word coming from the streets. If you want to dance, head on down to the bayside village for another locals night of music and dancing.
Left - The icon of the Virgin Mary was paraded through Vathy as part of a religious ceremony at which many of the priests from around the region took part. Many locals ventured out into the main street of Vathy to honour their relgious icon.

Left - An intimate crowd gathered for Cine Vigla, which continued its summer film season with 'On The Road upstairs at the Spavento Bar terrace.
While summer heats up the pavement, there is also some heat eminating from Ithaca's council, which may experience some upheaval over the next few weeks.
