The Vathy Carnival is a colourful and happy family affair, spiced with the cheekiness of a community which has tired of the Winter solitude, made more prominent this year with the black-out and ferry strikes. It's a time for fun and tradition on this last day before Lent begins. Everyone gets into the spirit of the day, and it's clear that much thought and preparation have gone into the costumes for the young and the old of the parade. Absent from the parade this year, were the big groups of High Schoolers, who usually have wild performances choreographed for the Ithacan community. The turn out was a little less than other years also, but it didn't matter. The organizers had made sure there was plenty to entertain those who gathered in the streets of Vathy. |
