Yiorgos
is in the unfortunate position of not being able to live on Ithaki full-time
due to the lack of work on the island. His wife Roula sees him only on weekends
and holidays when he comes from Athens, where he is the Manager of Pirelli
Tyres. His dream was to live in Kioni, but for the time being he'll have
to be satisfied with the frequent trips back and forth to the mainland.
Big business on the island would undoubtedly ruin Ithaki and without it
locals need to go elsewhere to financially support themselves and their
families. For this problem there is no answer so far. We hope Yiorgos will
not have to wait until retirement to settle in Kioni as the local he wants
to be. |
