A perfect day to take a hike up to Vigla in the north of the island, for the celebration at Ag. Nikola chapel, tucked away amongst boulders and age old olive trees. Young and old took to their walking sticks and climbed the narrow rocky track.
Some of the locals and kids headed up the day before, taking up supplies and then staying overnight, obviously with alot of cheer and good times. Putting on the lamb on the spit early in the morning, ready for May Day.
We walked up through lush green ferns, carpeting over the rugged landscape.
As we climbed higher and higher, Ithaca was laid beneath us under a thin heat mist.
Locals nestled under the cooling shade of old olive trees and perched themselves on the boulders around them.
Souvlaki were grilling and the lamb on the spit was off the rotisserie, ready to be devoured, which it was, quite quickly.
