Every year, a pilgrimage is made up the mountain to the tiny chapel at Vigla, high above Kioni, where locals spend the night and then cook up a storm in the early morning, ready for those who have the energy, health and Will to make the climb. It's not for the weak of body or of mind. The climb is steep and relentless until the plateau of Vigla is reached, where huge rocks welcome everyone. If you continued further on, you would reach Anoghi. This year, the skies were a bit grey, but it wasn't cold and the turnout wasn't as big as other years, but it was fun and the food was delicious! Instead of the lamb on the spitroast, this year it was slow cooked on an open fire which made it very tender. Possibly not a day for vegetarians or vegans as the celebrations were clearly aimed around the lamb...and the chapel of course. Visitors to the island are always welcome so next year, grab your walking sticks and make your way up. Hitch a ride with a local so you don't get lost and enjoy this traditional celebration.
