Tuesday 25th March 2014
Greek Independence Day, is a national holiday celebrated annually in Greece on March 25. It commemorates the beginning of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. This holiday also coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God. On Ithaca it means a church service, the laying of a wreath at the Vathy memorial and then a parade with a speech. Stavros and Vathy put on a parade, but in order to do both, I couldn't take much time in Stavros. Still we got a few photos in before heading to the main town of Vathy.
