This years' Marida Festival was very well attended, the weather was most conducive to being out by the bay, eating fish and enjoying the company of friends. What could be better. |

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the Marida Festival this year due to being off the island for a few days, but luckily there is more than 1 person with a camera on Ithaki. I sincerely want to thank Stephen Stylianos from Homers View Villas in Kolieri for volunteering to take photos of this wonderful annual festival in my absence. I'm sure you'll all enjoy his perspective of this event on Ithaca. Traditionally on the 1st October each year, fisherman go out in their boats and hawl in the first sardines of the season. The Marida Festival at Polis Bay celebrates this with a church service, blessing of the waters and the boats, and then a big feast of fried sardines, salad and bread, that people can enjoy for a small clink in the donation box. Stavros locals lend a hand to make this wonderful day a real community celebration, fun for all the family. |
